All of Bartholomew's muscles, veins, and tendons are exposed across the statue. The sculpture was likely less of a piece of Christian faith and rather an artistic essay on human anatomy, offering a stunning Renaissance-era depiction of muscles and bodily structures.


Why The Saint Bartholomew Statue In Milan Shows Him Holding His Own Skin

The statue was carved by Marco d'Agrate in 1562 and placed in Milan's cathedral. The artist carved his name at the bottom, obviously very proud of his work, saying, "I was not sculpted by Praxiteles," - one of the most renowned sculptors of Ancient Greece! - "but by Marco d'Agrate". And it really is an incredible piece of work.

22 March 2019 Of the sculptures seen in the Milan Duomo one in particular always creates a lot of interest and curiosity for millions of visitors walking the Monument's naves every year. It is the statue of "St Bartholomew skinned", made by the sculptor Marco d'Agrate in 1562 for the Veneranda Fabbrica of the Duomo.

Martyrdom was a badge of honor for these Christian saints because their suffering brought them closer to Christ. By showing a skinned saint, artists drove home the story of Bartholomew's life.

His best known work is the statue of St Bartholomew Flayed (1562), depicting Bartholomew the Apostle, found in the transept of the Cathedral of Milan. He signed it with a line in Latin that states: Non me Praxiteles, sed Marc'finxit Agrat, "I was not made by Praxiteles but by Marco d'Agrate". Sources

Duomo di Milano - Saint Bartholomew Saint Bartholomew the Apostle is said to have been skinned alive. This statue by Marco d'Agrate (1562) shows him draped in his own skin. I distinctly remember having to portray Saint Barholomew in a church ritual as kid and being quite disappointed that I wasn't one of the cool characters.

It's called Saint Bartholomew Flayed by Renaissance sculptor Marco d'Agrate, 1562. It's a statue of Saint Bartholomew holding his own skin. I was drawn to this statue in the cathedral, not because I knew anything about it, but because it was just so different from all the other statues. I thought the wrapping he wore was a cloth.
